53% voters exercise franchise in Yamunanagar & Jagadhri
Around 53 per cent (1,90,082) voters cast their votes in the elections for the posts of mayor and councillors of the Yamunanagar-Jagadhri Municipal Corporation (MC) on Sunday.
The Radaur Municipal Committee witnessed 79.7 per cent voter turnout.
According to information, voting was held at 348 polling stations. There are 22 wards and 3,55,278 lakh voters in the MC area. The elections were held for the post of mayor and the 21 posts of councillor.
Bhavna Bittu had previously been elected unopposed to the post of Ward 9 Councillor.
Three candidates, including Suman Behmani of BJP and Kirna Devi of Congress, contested the election for the post of Mayor, and 86 candidates were in fray for the posts of councillor here.
Shiv Pratap Bajaj (89) said he felt happy after casting his vote. He said everyone should cast their votes to strengthen democracy.
As per available information, after offering prayers at Khera Baba and the Hanuman temple in Gobindpura village, BJP’s mayoral candidate, Suman Behmani, and with her family cast their votes at booth 340 — Government Senior Secondary School, Gobindpura (Yamunanagar).
Deputy Commissioner Parth Gupta visited a number of booths and said polling was held peacefully at all polling stations, including the 60 sensitive booths.
Superintendent of Police Rajiv Deswal said about 1,500 police personnel had been deputed for the peaceful conduct of the elections.
Voting also concluded peacefully at all 14 polling stations for the Radaur Municipal Committee elections, as per available information. Haryana Agriculture and Farmer Welfare Minister Shyam Singh Rana, who is the MLA from the Radaur Assembly constituency, cast his vote at a booth in Radaur.
Claiming the victory of the BJP candidate Rajnish Mehta, aka Shalu, for the post of president/chairman, the minister said the public had welcomed the welfare policies of the BJP in Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, and, now, in the civic body elections.
In Radaur, five candidates are trying their luck for the post of chairman, and 36 candidates for the posts of councillor.
