6 MBBS students of Sonepat medical college suspended for 'ragging'
Six MBBS students of Bhagat Phool Singh Medical College for Women at Khanpur Kalan in Sonepat have been suspended following a complaint on the national anti-ragging helpline.
Enraged over the suspension, senior students protested at the office of Dr JC Dureja, Director, BPS Medical College. They refuted the allegation and demanded the revocation of the suspension.
Sources said an anonymous complaint was lodged by a parent on the national anti-ragging helpline alleging ragging of first-year students in the medical college. Following the complaint, Gohana SDM Anjali Shrotriya reached the college and issued directions to initiate an inquiry into the matter. The anti-ragging committee of the college began the probe.
The sources said prima facie no physical assault or violation was found with the first-year students. However, some WhatsApp messages sent to junior students were found objectionable. Taking a serious note of the messages, the college authorities suspended six second-year MBBS students.
A student on anonymity said the authorities initiated the action after some parents alleged ragging of their wards. Senior students refuted the allegation saying there was no interaction between the senior and the first-year students, who have their hostel in the B block on the teachers’ campus. Dr JC Dureja couldn't be contacted despite several attempts.
The SDM said some students had been suspended in connection with the matter and the anti-ragging committee was probing the matter. "The guidelines on ragging given by the Supreme Court are very strict, and all are bound to obey them. However, no physical assault or violation was found in the preliminary investigation, she said.
Besides, a separate investigation to know the source of the complaint through the cyber cell is underway.
