600 bulk waste generators register on Gurugram MC portal
Bulk waste generators (BWGs) in Gurugram have started showing interest in online registration with the Municipal Corporation as per the provisions of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.
In the past one month, at least 600 BWGs have registered themselves with the civic body. Earlier, only 450 BWGs were registered with the civic body till November 30 last year.
The sudden increase in the figures have been attributed to a tough posture adopted by the MCG against the errant BWGs who were dilly-dallying in registering themselves with the civic body.
Besides, officials of the civic body held a series of meetings with the BWGs in the past few months apprising them of following the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, to make the city clean.
A fine of Rs 25,000 each was imposed on over 200 BWGs in the past one year for not complying with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.
Dr Balpreet Singh, Additional Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Gurugram, said: “After the introduction of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, it is mandatory for BWGs having waste generation rate exceeding 100 kg per day to facilitate the collection, processing and disposal of waste within their premises”.
He said: “The MC is encouraging maximum number of BWGs to process their own waste and also to educate and enlighten them about the latest techniques of waste management”.
He said the MC had formed a special cell to inspect the bulk waste generators and ensure compliance of the rules. This cell visits the BWGs and asks them to register on the online portal. The civic body has also hired several agencies to provide guidance on waste management to the bulk waste generators.
It may be mentioned that the MC has identified as many as 1,681 BWGs in Gurugram, which generate about 20 per cent of the city’s total solid waste. As per the figures, they generate 220 tonnes of solid waste per day. Out of these BWGs, only 400 of them manage 62 tonnes of solid waste per day.
The remaining waste generated by the BWGs is either handed over to the waste collection agencies or their employees, or illegally dumped in the vacant plots and on the roadsides.
A total of 1,200 metric tonnes of solid waste is generated in Gurugram city daily, which goes to the Bandhwari landfill site and other waste management facilities set-up by the civic body.
In an affidavit filed before the National Green Tribunal by the MCG last month, the civic body has fixed a target of 50 per cent compliance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, by January 31 this year. Similarly, a target of 60 per cent achievement has been fixed till the end of February and 75 per cent by March 31.
