8 of a family dead as car falls into canal in Haryana's Kaithal

Police say the family was headed for Dussehra prayers at Ravidas Dera in Guhna village when the incident took place

A devastating car accident near Mundri village in Kaithal district resulted in the loss of eight lives from the same family, including three women and five girls, when their vehicle plunged into a canal on Saturday.

The police reported that nine family members were travelling from Deeg village to Guhna village to attend Dussehra prayers at Ravidas Dera. The survivors included the driver, Karamjeet alias Kala (40), a resident of Deeg village.

The passengers included Karamjeet’s wife Darshna (38), mother Chameli Devi (68), brother Parveen Kumar's wife Sukhwinder (38), daughters Fiza (20), Vandana (15), and nieces Ria (13) and Ramneet (7), and daughter Komal (17). The accident occurred around 8.30 am when Karamjeet lost control, causing the car to plunge into the canal.

Local villagers rushed to the scene, retrieved the car, and transported seven family members to hospitals, where they were declared dead. Komal’s body was recovered later that evening, bringing the death toll to eight.

“The driver survived, but eight other occupants drowned,” said DSP Pundri, Lalit Kumar. SP Rajesh Kalia stated they are investigating possible brake failure.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Haryana’s caretaker Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini expressed condolences on X. Other officials, including Hisar MP Kumari Selja and newly elected Kaithal MLA Aditya Surjewala, also conveyed their grief.
