Students of Dyal Singh College, Karnal, showcased their talent on the first day of the two-day 73rd annual athletics meet on Friday.
In 200m race, Anjali secured the first position, while Aanchal came second and Jyoti bagged the third position in the girl’s category. In 400m race (boys), Gurmeet secured the first position, while Himanshu bagged the second position and Bharat Kumar was declared third.
In long jump (girls), Anjali bagged the first position, while Divya secured the second position and Aanchal came third. In javelin throw (boys), Sachin, Kamal, and Shivaji Turke bagged first, second and third positions, respectively. In javelin throw (girls) Shilpa, Vanshika Rana and Anjali secured the first, second and third positions, respectively. In the 800m race (boys), Gurmeet, Himanshu, and Sohail bagged the first, second and third positions, respectively.
Chief Guest Mamta Sachdeva, an alumna of the college, said, “Games enlighten us those aspects of life which even classes and books cannot teach us. Education has also become a necessity today but it is incomplete without sports.” She added that education improves the intellectual development of humans but physical and mental development happens only through sports.
Principal Ashima Gakhar said sports are an integral part of any educational institution. She emphasised the importance of sports saying they help them in staying active and healthy. Besides, they also teach us discipline and team spirit. Sports even inculcate the spirit of competition as well as brotherhood and help the youth to prepare themselves for the task of nation-building.
49th athletics meet at Indira Gandhi National College Kurukshetra: The 49th two-day annual athletics meet of Indira Gandhi National College, Ladwa, concluded on Thursday. Pankaj Nain, DIG Anti-Corruption Bureau, Haryana, was chief guest of the closing ceremony.
He boosted the morale of the players and said that everyone must include sports in their daily routine.
He said, “The word ‘laziness’ should not be in a player’s dictionary. One should set high goals in life and move forward with determination to achieve them.”
Pawan Garg, president of the college governing body, said the real victory is in making one’s own identity. In today’s competitive era, it is extremely important for an ideal player to have various positive qualities in order to achieve a goal.
College Principal Kushal Pal advised the students and players to stay away from drug addiction and as it is a curse. Exhorting the players, he said they should never be stressed after losing a game and aim to achieve victory with courage and immense hard work.
Mohit (BA I) and Vidhi (BA II) were named the best athletes in men’s and women’s category, respectively.
In javelin throw, Saurabh, Mohit and Ankit stood first, second and third, respectively, in men’s category, while in women’s category, Chanchal, Mehak and Manjeet Kaur stood first, second and third, respectively. In discus throw (women), Pinky, Manpreet and Manjeet stood first, second and third, respectively. In discus throw (men), Sahil stood first, Bhavishya came second and Aditya secured the third position. In high jump (women), Amandeep, Vidhi and Payal stood first, second and third, respectively, whereas Aniket Sharma, Yogesh and Sahil stood first, second and third, respectively, in men’s category.
In 800m race (men), Mohit was followed by Harpal and Amandeep at second and third positions, while in the women’s category, Neha, Vidhi and Pinky stood first, second and third, respectively. In the shot put competition, Manjeet Kaur, Chanchal and Vidhi stood first, second and third, respectively.
