Faridabad, August 13

The Health Department here has issued notices to 750 households over the detection of mosquito larvae in residential areas. Ten dengue cases and eight malaria cases have been reported in the district so far. There were only five such cases — three of dengue and two of malaria — last month.

In view of the rising cases of vector-borne diseases, the Health Department has intensified its drive to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes. Admitting that there is a surge in the number of patients with fever, the officials said the department had already collected around 1.35 lakh slides of blood sample for tests since January 1. Of the 4,500 samples collected for dengue, 10 were found positive.

It is claimed that waterlogging could lead to an increase in the number of malaria and dengue cases if surroundings were not cleaned regularly. The Municipal Corporation has been asked to ensure that the accumulated rainwater is drained out from the residential areas.

Last year, there were 190 cases of dengue and three malaria cases in the district. A majority of these cases were reported in private hospitals.

“The exercise connected with checking the breeding of mosquitoes and issuing notices against the accumulation of unwanted water on residential premises was accelerated in view of waterlogging after rain in residential areas,” said Dr Ram Bhagat, Deputy CMO and in-charge of the Malaria Department.
