80-year-old woman burnt alive after house catches fire in Gurugram

An elderly woman was burnt alive in a tragic fire incident that took place in Saraswati Vihar here. The fire broke out due to a short circuit in the heater installed at her house.

According to the police, the deceased was identified as Anjali Bakshi (80). Anjali lived on the first floor of the house while her son and other family members live on the ground floor.

On Wednesday night, around 11:30 pm, the victim’s family members saw smoke coming out of the first floor of the house, and tried to go upstairs, but failed to do so.

Following this, they contacted the police and fire brigade.

Upon receiving information, the teams of police and fire brigade reached the spot.

The fire was brought under control within half an hour but by the time it was extinguished, the woman was dead.

The 80-year-old, who was sleeping on the first floor, was burnt alive while goods worth lakhs were also gutted in the fire.

ASI Rajesh Kumar, the investigating officer, said the cause of the fire was believed to be a short circuit in the heater.

A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team had inspected the spot and collected evidence, he said. “We have taken the statements of the victim’s

family members, and the case is being investigated,” he added.
