A first: Forensic and monitoring unit inaugurated in Gurugram

Now, investigation and identification of criminals will become easier for the Gurugram Police as the department has set up its first forensic and monitoring unit here with the help of a private company, IIRIS Consulting.

To help speed up investigations

• The unit is expected to accelerate the pace of investigation as forensic and analytics reports, which used to take days or months, would now be available within hours.
• The forensic and monitoring unit would be equipped with facilities for digital forensics, open-source intelligence, image/CCTV analytics, handwriting and fingerprints analysis, cyber monitoring, morph image analysis.

Police Commissioner Vikas Kumar Arora on Friday inaugurated the forensic and monitoring unit, which has been established on the second floor of his office building. “This unit will help in speeding up police work as the work that used to take several days would now be completed in a few minutes or hours,” the commissioner added.

ACP (crime) Varun Dahiya enlisted digital forensics, open-source intelligence, image/CCTV analytics and morph image analysis as some of the most impressive features of the new unit.

Besides, the unit will also facilitate handwriting and fingerprints analysis and cyber monitoring within the district. Earlier, the investigating officers had to wait for days for the report from the forensic science laboratory at Madhuban.

A senior officer of a crime unit said the process for analytics was so lengthy that sometimes they had to wait for a minimum of two months to get the report. Now, with the help of the forensic and monitoring unit, the police would be able to get the same report within hours, the officer added.
