Karnal: Retired officials under the aegis of Shri DR Vasudeva Charitable Trust distributed about 70 quilts among the needy here on Sunday. Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) RN Vasudeva, businessman Jagdish Tuteja, retired official SK Sharma, retired scientist Neelam Chopra and other members of the trust pooled in money for the quilts. The charitable had started the novel initiative around a decade ago. Vasudeva said the quilts were distributed to the deserving ones after visiting their homes verifying ascertaining their need.
Cop’s environment rescue act
Kurukshetra: Climate Reality Project India organised an international seminar on ‘Global frameworks in the local context: Challenges and way forward’. The conference was organised at the Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development, Chandigarh. The objective was to discuss the roadmap for achieving sustainable development goals of the Centre. Sub-inspector Ashok Kumar Verma was honoured during the programme. He is the national gold medallist blood donor and environment watchdog. He has held 227 cycle rallies for environment protection and planted more than 14,000 trees.
NGO takes anti-drug stance
Karnal: Nav Chetna Manch, an NGO, has launched an anti-drug drive. Its convener SP Chauhan said he and NGO volunteers would reach out to school and college students to spread awareness against drugs. For the purpose, they will take the help of other NGOs. Chauhan told the media celebrities would be made part of the campaign, besides roping in panches, sarpanches, and block samiti and Zila Parishad members. “The drug menace has gripped Punjab and Haryana. The mission is to save our youth from the drug menace. We will organise awareness camps in schools and colleges,” he said.
1,259 cases disposed of in Lok Adalat
Sonepat: In all, 1,259 cases were disposed in national Lok Adalat organised by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) here on Saturday. The total settlement amount was about Rs3crore. Tayyab Hussain, DLSA secretary, said 567 cases of electricity bills, 110 cases of civil nature and 213 cases of criminal nature were settled. Besides, 64 cases of bank loans involving an amount Rs1.68 crore, 48 cases of cheque bounce with a liability of about Rs1 crore and five cases of the Motor Vehicle Act involving a penalty of Rs28 lakh were disposed of. Yashvir Singh Rathore, District and Session Judge and DLSA chairman, supervised the Lok Adalat proceedings.
Karnal Mayor reviews development works
Karnal: Mayor Renu Bala Gupta has ordered an inquiry to find out reasons for stopping the construction of a community centre in the district’s Daha village. She was on a visit to Daha, Sirsi and Madanpur villages and reviewed development works. Gupta was informed that the construction was stopped as some irregularities surfaced. The Mayor directed MC’s engineering wing to fix responsibility of the person or the agency concerned. In Sirsi village, people complained of poor drainage system. Subsequently, the Mayor directed officials to get it repaired immediately.
Researcher bags fellowship
Hisar: Dr Sapna Khyalia has bagged a post-doctoral fellowship in the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) from Kurukshetra University. She hails from Tosham in Bhiwani district. She completed the PhD from the Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology. Hisar. Khyalia was a topper in the master’s of mass communication and M Phil from KU. She will carry out the post-doctoral research under the guidance of Prof Bindu Sharma in the field of international political research.
43 YMCA students land jobs
Faridabad: The JC Bose University of Science and Technology, YMCA, in association with the Faridabad chapter of the MOB — the alumni association of the university — held a placement drive for students, who had passed out between 2017 and 2019. In all, 43 applicants were given offer letters on Saturday. The target is to give jobs to 70 students. The drive was conducted by the university’s training and placement department, and the alumni and corporate affairs cell. As many as 41 companies based out of the NCR, including multinational companies, participated in the placement drive. The companies are mainly owned or managed by the university’s alumni. University Vice-Chancellor Dinesh Kumar said more students were likely to be selected as the recruitment process was in progress.
