The Municipal Corporation (MC) will beautify the areas along the drain-6 crossing through the town after the completion of the work to cover it.

Chief Minister Manohar Lal had announced to cover the drain number-6 flowing through the town on the lines of the Mughal canal in Karnal city. Former Urban Local Bodies Minister Kavita Jain had inaugurated the work to cover the part-1 of the drain at a cost of Rs 92 crore.

The work, however, went on at a very slow pace due to hurdles like encroachments on the sides of the drain and tree cutting etc. An amount of Rs 47.29 crore has been allotted to cover part-2 of the drain, which is around 2,600 m.

With the covering of the drain, people living in Sectors 12, 14, 15, Baba Colony, Baiyanpur Khurd, Patel Nagar, Shani temple, Jatwara, Kami Chowk, vegetable market, Baba Dham, Old Housing Board Colony, Sikka Colony, Jeewan Nagar, Tara Nagar, Pancham Nagar, 4-Marla, Kabirpur, Shadipur would get relief from the stench. This would also play a big role in decongesting traffic movement on the existing roads.

Sources said the completion of the covering of the drain was likely to be completed by June. Now, the MC has started making plans to beautify the drain, which would likely to be completed within the next five months.

A special consultant had been hired by the MC to prepare the beautification project and MC Commissioner Vishram Kumar Meena even discussed the beautification project with senior officials.

The MC was planning to develop a plaza, multifunctional space, skating rink, playcourts for children, community space with toilets, entry court, mound, kids’ mound, tree court, sitting space, toddlers playing area, rainbow plaza, kids’ play area, restaurant court, toilet, parking, lay-by-lane and 2m-wide pathways for pedestrians etc.

Vishram Kumar Meena told The Tribune that a proposal was being prepared for the beautification of the drain sides. Most likely, the work of covering the drain would be completed within next five months, as it was going at a full pace, he said.

The beautification proposal had been discussed with higher officials and after getting green light from the government, a DPR was being prepared for it, Meena said. After this, the roads would be developed and the traffic load on the existing roads would also be reduced, he said.

The beautification would be done in three phases. In the first phase, the area from the Murthal road bridge on drain-6 to the bridge on the Bahalgarh road would be developed. In phase 2, the area from the bridge on the Bahalgarh road to the ITI- road bridge would be beautified and in phase-3, the area from the bridge on the Murthal road to the Kami road would be beautified, the Commissioner said.
