Following massive citizen protest against the proposed second landfill at Daultabad village along the Dwarka Expressway, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini has put plans on hold.
Bid to clear garbage mound at bandhwari
- Struggling to clear the infamous Bandhwari landfill, the Gurugram MC had doubled up efforts to process legacy waste, and announced that it would set up a new site at Daultabad village along the Dwarka expressway to process fresh waste.
- The MC had announced that 1,200 metric tonnes of waste coming to Bandhwari will be diverted to the Daultabad landfill and processed on a daily basis. The announcement had led to a major uproar and protests that started a week ago.
The plan has not been cancelled, but put on hold. We have been asked to look for an alternative site. But in case no appropriate site is found, the authorities would resume the process of setting up landfill at Daultabad. — Nishant Yadav, Deputy Commissioner, Gurugram
Saini, who will be in Manesar tomorrow, has asked the local administration and the Municipal Corporation to look for an alternative site.
However, Deputy Commissioner Nishant Yadav clarified that the plan had not been cancelled, but put on hold. “We have been asked to look for an alternative site. But in case no appropriate site was found, the authorities would resume setting up of landfill at Daultabad,” the DC told The Tribune.
Gurugram MC Commissioner Narhari Singh Banger said he was yet to get any instructions in this regard.
Meanwhile, the Dwarka Expressway protest groups, which included local villagers, condominium residents, farmers and investors, celebrated their victory, but also asked stakeholders to remain cautious that the alternate site wasn’t along the Dwarka Expressway either.
“We have been heard, but it is not over yet. They are talking about finding an alternative site, but may try to look for another site within the vicinity of the Dwarka Expressway. So, we need to be alert,” read a statement issued by the protest groups.
