Kurukshetra, July 29
Days after a 65-year-old woman, Gurdeep Kaur, died after being attacked by a stray cow in Patel Nagar, the Thanesar Municipal Council has started shifting the cattle from residential areas to gaushalas.
However, residents are unlikely to get relief from the exercise soon as there are hundreds of stray cattle in the city. There are around 800 stray cattle within the MC limits in Thanesar and the situation is the same in other areas of the district.
Besides the local roads, the stray cattle can be spotted on the National Highway-44, which is a matter of concern for commuters.
The stray cattle can be spotted near Kurukshetra University’s third gate, Narkatari, KDB road, Salarpur road, Pipli chowk, near bus stand, Pehowa chowk, mini-secretariat and in various residential colonies.
Sunil Kumar, a resident of Sector 13, said, “The stray animals roam freely on the roads and in residential colonies and thrive on garbage dumps. Sometimes bulls start fighting in the middle of a road, giving tense moments to people, especially children and elderly. The administration should take appropriate measures to make roads safer and take action against people who leave their cattle on roads. Dairies being run in the city areas should be shifted outside the MC limits.”
Meanwhile, members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) led by district secretary Rajvinder Singh today held a protest at mini-secretariat and submitted a memorandum to the City Magistrate for the Haryana Governor.
Rajvinder Singh said, “A large number of stray cattle can be spotted in the city areas and the cattle have become a cause of accidents here. People are getting injured and killed, but the government hasn’t been able to take concrete steps. If all cattle are not shifted, people of Kurukshetra will start an agitation.”
The protesters said the government should give a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the victim.
Executive Officer of Thanesar Municipal Council, Abhe Yadav said, “As per a survey, there are around 800 stray cattle in Thanesar City and a campaign has been launched to shift the cattle to gaushalas. The process of hiring an agency to catch and shift the cattle is on.”
Meanwhile, Minister of State for Urban Local Bodies and Thanesar MLA, Subhash Sudha, said, “Directions have been issued to the Municipal Council officials to shift the stray cattle from roads to Gaushalas to avoid any untoward incident in future”.
“There are a few dairies being operated under the limits of the council and it has been observed that the dairy operators leave their cattle after milking them. Notices will be issued to such dairy operators by the Municipal Council. The dairies will be sealed for a violation of the directions,” she added.
Shift dairies out of residential colonies
Over 100 stray cattle have been shifted to gaushalas so far. Eight teams of the MC have been deployed to catch the stray cattle. Meanwhile, notices were served on 10 dairy operators today and they have been told to shift their dairies out of residential colonies by August 6, else the dairies will be sealed.
