Agroha set for tourism makeover
The Haryana Government is developing Agroha, once the capital of Maharaja Agrasen, into a major tourism and cultural heritage centre. A state-of-the-art museum will be set up to preserve and showcase excavated antiquities.
Presiding over a review meeting on Agroha’s archaeological site development, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said, “Agroha holds immense archaeological and cultural importance. Its development will not only make it a centre of faith but also establish it as an international tourist destination.”
The Chief Minister directed the Hisar-Agroha Metropolitan Development Authority to prepare a comprehensive master plan for Agroha’s integrated tourism development. He also ordered geo-tagging and declaring the surrounding mounds as protected areas to safeguard them.
It was informed that excavation is underway on nearly five acres, jointly undertaken by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the Haryana State Archaeology Department. A Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey guided the excavation, and artefacts discovered so far suggest Agroha could reshape the historical narrative not just of Haryana but of the country.
Urban Local Bodies Minister Vipul Goel, Heritage and Tourism Minister Dr Arvind Sharma, former Minister Dr Kamal Gupta, Aseem Goel, and former Vidhan Sabha Speaker Gian Chand Gupta attended the meeting.
