Ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, the district administration has conducted a rationalisation process and added 34 new polling booths. With these new booths, the number has gone up to 1,181. Earlier, there were 1,147 of these in the district.
It was disclosed by District Election Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner Uttam Singh after the inspection of the polling booths in the Karnal Assembly segment on Friday. Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohit Handa was also with the DC.
“As per the guidelines of the Election Commission, we have conducted a rationalisation process and added 34 new polling booths. The increased number aims at providing better convenience to the voters, reducing the need to stand in long queues,” said Uttam Singh. Singh explained that the voter lists were reviewed following the Election Commission’s guidelines. “Six new booths have been added in the Indri Assembly segment, while 11 in Karnal and12 in Gharaunda. No new booth has been added in the Nilokheri assembly segment,” said the DC.
The DC and SP inspected the newly established booths in Sector 9, Karn Vihar, Sector16, and near Banso Gate. During the inspection, they reviewed the polling booths, toilet facilities, lighting, fans, and access routes.
The DC directed the officials to ensure all facilities. He said the upcoming Assembly elections were a priority and ensuring fair elections was the primary responsibility of the district administration. Essential facilities at the voting centres should be in place to prevent any inconvenience to the voters, he directed.
