The body of Air Force soldier Sachin Rohil (25), was cremated with full military honours at his native village, Bhiwani Rohilla, in the district on Thursday. He lost his life while trying to save a civilian from drowning in Assam.
His younger brother, Sagar, performed the final rites after his mortal remains reached the village around 10 am. A large crowd gathered to pay their respects to the martyr. Schoolchildren, holding the national flag, had tears in their eyes as chants of “Sachin Rohil Amar Rahe” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” filled the air. The funeral was attended by local MLA Randhir Panihar and people from neighbouring villages.
Sachin was serving in the Indian Air Force’s 11 Air Wing and was posted in Tezpur, Assam. On April 14, he went missing after he jumped into Bharali river at Bhalukpong in Sonitpur district to save a drowning civilian. Following the incident, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) launched a search operation and recovered the body April 15. The ITBP team, led by Assistant Commandant Gambhir Singh Chauhan, carried out the operation to recover the body from the river.
Tributes were offered by several military and civil officials, including Flight Lieutenant Anubhuti Bhardwaj, Tehsildar Anil Bidhan, Warrant Officer Mukanaram Choudhary, Junior Warrant Officer Satish Kumar, Sub-Inspector Naseeb Khan of the Haryana Police and others.
Sachin was born on March 23, 2002, and joined the Indian Air Force in 2020. His family had moved to Jind town two decades ago but remained connected to their village roots. His father passed away in a road accident eight years ago and his mother Kamlesh, a homemaker, raised both sons. Sachin was unmarried and the elder of the two brothers. His younger brother Sagar works in the private sector. Chief Minister Nayab Saini paid tribute on social media, expressing pride in Sachin’s courage and offering condolences to the grieving family.
The residents of Bhiwani Rohilla village kept the market closed in respect of martyr Sachin. His grandfather, Chatar Singh (80), with tears in his eyes said he was proud of his grandson’s sacrifice.
