Alert sounded for colonies near Tangri river amid rising water levels

The district administration has sounded a flood alert for residents of colonies situated on the Tangri riverbed and adjoining low-lying areas due to heavy flow of water in the seasonal river.

The Tangri river swells when there is heavy rain in the Shivalik region, and is expected to receive over 30,000 cusecs water. Its danger mark is 15,400 cusecs.

The district administration has ordered closure of a school near the river, for today, and the teams of NDRF and SDRF have been put in alert.

The residents in low lying areas have been advised to shift to safer places.

The river had touched the level of around 24,000 cusecs a few days ago. The water had entered the streets, forcing the residents living in the low-lying areas to shift their belongings to safer places. However, the water later receded and no loss was reported.

In 2023, the overflowing river caused heavy losses, and the water left a trail of large-scale damage. People were forced to shift to safer places, and on return, they found their houses with ruined furniture, machinery, accumulated sludge and mud. The industrial area and the nearby colonies had also suffered heavy losses.
