Haryana’s Energy, Transport and Labour Minister Anil Vij said that under the Swamitva Scheme, Municipal Council Ambala Sadar had so far received around Rs 33 crore in revenue and that residents of Ambala Cantonment were taking full benefit of the scheme.
He said that under the scheme, Municipal Council Ambala Sadar had approved 58 per cent of ‘tehbazari’, rent and lease applications that were over 20 years old.
He further said that so far, registrations had been completed in 438 such cases and the applicants had become shop owners.
He said that instructions had been issued to municipal officials to expedite the remaining pending cases so that more people could gain ownership of their shops.
As per the available information, the Swamitva Scheme was implemented in Ambala Cantonment due to the efforts of Vij. Earlier, the scheme’s benefits were not available in Ambala Cantonment due to it being an excise area.
Under this scheme, shopkeepers who had been operating under ‘tehbazari’, lease, or rent for more than 20 years were to be given ownership rights to their shops.
Vij said that under the Swamitva Scheme, Municipal Council Ambala Sadar invited applications from tenants who had occupied municipal council shops for more than 20 years to grant them ownership rights.
“A total of 734 tenants applied. Out of them, 535 cases have been approved and registrations has been completed for 417 tenants—who are now no longer tenants but shop owners. These shop owners can now also construct multi-storey buildings on their premises,” said Vij.
He said that 223 ‘tehbazari’ applications were received under the Swamitva Scheme, out of which 126 cases have been approved and 21 had already been registered. He further said that the registration process for the remaining cases was being carried out swiftly.
“Similarly, 190 lease applications were received by the Municipal Council and further actions are underway,” said Anil Vij.
