Amid persistent foggy weather, the Public Works Department (PWD) (B&R) has initiated road safety measures across the city and key state highways and major roads of the district to ensure safer travel for commuters.

White lines are being painted along the edges of roads, while zebra crossings at traffic signals and speed breakers are being repainted with white thermoplastic road marking paint to enhance visibility during low-light and foggy conditions.

The authorities claim that these steps are crucial in reducing accidents and making roads more convenient for commuters, especially during the ongoing winter season.

Sandeep Singh, Executive Engineer (XEN) of PWD (B&R), highlighted the importance of these measures, saying, “These efforts are part of our road safety initiative to ensure safe travel for everyone. We have already covered 250 km with thermoplastic road marking paint and work is under way to cover additional stretches wherever necessary.”

The thermoplastic paint being used for the markings is designed for durability and high visibility even in adverse weather conditions. The freshly painted road markings and zebra crossings are expected to guide motorists more effectively and improve pedestrian safety at crossings, he added.

In addition to these measures, the authorities have advised commuters to use fog lights while driving during foggy conditions. Fog lights help improve visibility on roads and reduce the risk of accidents caused by poor weather conditions.

Residents also welcomed the measures, expressing hope that the improved road markings will make city roads and highways safer and more comfortable. “These roads should have been painted before the foggy weather, but still it is a welcome step to reduce the accidents and make travelling safer,” said Laddy Sandhu, a local resident.
