Another face-off with Gopal Kanda in Sirsa likely
Gokul Setia’s induction into the Congress has fuelled expectation that the party may field him from the Sirsa Assembly seat. He had contested the 2019 elections from the seat as an Independent candidate and lost to Gopal Kanda by mere 602 votes.
Other strong contenders for the party ticket include Rajkumar Sharma, son of late Hoshiari Lal Sharma, and Amir Chawla, a recent defector from the INLD and the JJP.
Setia joined the Congress in New Delhi today in the presence of senior leaders, including former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Deepak Babaria, state Congress president Udai Bhan and Ajay Maken. Setia comes from a family having deep ties with the Congress. His grandfather, Lachhman Das Arora, was a five-time MLA and a tall leader of the party.
About Setia joining the Congress, Kanda said, “Gokul has returned to the Congress after moving around. When I contested the Assembly elections for the first time in 2009, the Setia family was with the Congress. After that, Gokul joined the BJP, sought support from the INLD, and now he’s back in the Congress. However, he will still suffer a massive defeat on the Sirsa seat once again.”
After Setia joined the Congress, Rajkumar Sharma called an emergency meeting of his supporters, signalling the beginning of an intense battle for the party ticket in Sirsa.
