Appoint female trainers in gyms, women’s commission to govt
Cites instances of discomfort, inappropriate behaviour
Sparing a thought for the safety and security of women, the Haryana State Commission for Women (HSWC) has asked the Saini government to ensure the appointment of women trainers in all gyms, both government and private, across the state.
In a communication to the Principal Secretary (Sports), Renu Bhatia, Chairperson of the commission, mentioned “several representations highlighting that many women faced discomfort, hesitation and, in certain cases, instances of inappropriate behaviour, in gyms and fitness centres due to the absence of female trainers or support staff.” It often discourages women from pursuing regular fitness activities, which were vital for their health and well-being, she said.
“In view of the above, the commission recommends that all government as well as private gyms operating in Haryana be mandated to appoint at least one qualified female gym trainer or instructor.” This would not only ensure a sense of safety and inclusivity but also encourage greater participation of women in sports and fitness activities—an objective in line with national policies promoting women’s empowerment and 'Fit India' initiative,” the communication stated.
Sources said the recommendation was apparently in line with a similar decision taken by the UP State Women’s Commission. The decision is likely to be implemented in major cities, including Gurugram, Faridabad, Panchkula, Karnal, Rohtak and Hisar, where a sizeable number of women frequented gyms and fitness centres.
