Karnal, June 15

To boost the health services in Assandh block of Karnal district, the government hospital in the town will be upgraded to a 100-bed facility with a trauma centre. Additional posts of doctors were also sanctioned for the hospital.

“The state government has approved upgrading of the hospital to 100 beds. We have sent a proposal for the construction of a new building,” said Dr Yogesh Sharma, Civil Surgeon.

He added that presently, there are 11 sanctioned posts of medical officer. After the new facility is completed, the number of sanctioned posts of doctor would increase to 31.

Upgrading the hospital, which earlier had 50 beds, was a long pending demand of the residents. Local MLA Shamsher Singh Gogi had also raised the issue in the Assembly at several occasions.

The residents are also demanding to fill the vacant posts of doctor as only one medical officer is working against the 11 sanctioned posts.Shamsher Singh Gogi, MLA Assandh, said since the town is situated on the border of three districts — Karnal, Kaithal and Jind — it requires better facilities. “In any emergency, people either rush to Karnal or nearby district headquarters. Karnal is around 45 km away from here,” he added.
