Gurugram, August 1
Union Minister of State for Planning, Statistics and Programme Implementation Rao Inderjit Singh inaugurated an AstroTurf hockey ground for playing hockey at the Nehru Stadium in Gurugram on Thursday.
While addressing a gathering, he said, “Hockey players should prepare on a ground of international standards.”
The Sports, Forests and Environment Minister of Haryana, Sanjay Singh, said the hostel lying shut in the Nehru Stadium would be reopened for the stay of hockey players.
A friendly hockey match was also organised between the teams of Faridabad and Gurugram districts. District Magistrate Nishant Kumar Yadav, who was also present on the occasion, said the ground had been constructed at a cost of Rs 7.79 crore. To protect the new turf from waterlogging, the existing ground was raised by about two-and-a-half feet, he said.
Giriraj Yadav, Deputy Director of the Sports Department, said, “The ground is 91.40 m long and 55 m wide. Six sprinklers have been installed to cover a distance of 45 to 50 m each.”
“As the ground requires continuous supply of water, a water tank has been built near the ground. Besides, these sprinklers are so powerful that the entire ground can be sprinkled within seven to 10 minutes,” the sports official said.
A seating arrangement for about 35 to 40 players has been made. Additionally, an iron mesh of about 15 ft has been installed around the ground, he added.
