At 78%, overspeeding biggest traffic violation in Kurukshetra
Despite awareness camps and challans, over-speeding emerged as the biggest traffic rule violation (78 per cent) in the district in April.
As per the data from the district police, over-speeding, driving without helmet, wrong-side driving, driving in wrong lane, without seat belt and without high-security number plate continue to be the major traffic rules violations.
As per the data, as many as 19,478 challans were issued in April and the Kurukshetra police imposed fines to the tune of Rs 6,35,77,000 on the traffic norms violators.
Of the total challans, as many as 15,272 were issued for over-speeding, followed by without helmet (1,710), wrong-side driving (1,226), lane change (898), without high security number plate (279), use of black films (40), drunken driving (37), without seat belt (36), use of mobile phone while driving (10) and triple riding (6). Besides these, 11 school buses were also issued challan for violation of traffic rules.
Kurukshetra police spokesman Naresh Kumar said, “The most common violation these days is over-speeding. Regular campaigns are being run to educate people about traffic laws and road regulations. Road safety programmes are being organised and challans are also issued for violation of traffic norms. People should follow rules as that will ultimately help in reducing accidents and saving lives.”
Besides the Police Department, the regional transport authority (RTA) in Kurukshetra has imposed fines to the tune of over Rs 97 lakh for overloading in April. RTA issued 244 challans last month.
An official said overloaded vehicles pose a serious life threat to commuters on the road and besides being a cause of road accidents, the overloaded vehicles also damage the road.
Secretary, Regional Transport Authority, Kurukshetra, Aman Kumar, said, “Special teams have been constituted and a close watch is being kept by the staff on overloaded vehicles plying on the roads. Penalties are being imposed accordingly. Seminars and workshops are organised in schools and colleges to educate children.”
The ADC, Kurukshetra, Sonu Bhatt, said during the road safety meeting, directions have been issued to the officials concerned that strict action should be taken against the people involved in overloading and violation of traffic rules. Officials of RTA and traffic police have been keeping a close watch in their respective areas to ensure that the rules are followed. The departments also organise awareness camps to motivate people to follow the traffic rules and ply with the load as per the approved load capacity of the vehicle.
