Awareness drive for senior citizens held

The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Kaithal, organised an awareness and outreach programme for senior citizens to disseminate information about the key provisions and benefits of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. The event was held at the conference hall of the Punjabi Welfare Sabha near Madan Lal Dhingra Smarak.

The programme was conducted under the directions of the Member Secretary, Haryana State Legal Services Authority (HSLSA), Panchkula, and under the supervision of Ajay Prashar, District & Sessions Judge and Chairman, DLSA Kaithal.

Kanwal Kumar, Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM)-cum-Secretary, DLSA, said the objective of the programme was to provide crucial knowledge of the special law to parents and senior citizens and to make them aware of their rights under the Act.

Arvind Khurania, panel advocate of DLSA Kaithal and the key speaker, said the act places an obligation on children to provide food, clothing, housing and medical care for their senior citizen parents. Children, including adult sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters, are required to provide for these basic needs.
