Bahadurgarh boy had won 3 medals days before fatal accident

A passionate basketball player, Aman (14) had won three medals at a school sports event days before he was killed in an on court accident at Brigadier Hoshiar Stadium in Bahadurgarh town.

Proudly placing the medals around his father’s neck, the Class X student had expressed his determination to become a top athlete. He never missed his practice and had been learning the sport for the past two years.

According to family members, on that fateful day Aman went out to play basketball despite his mother’s pleas to stay back, as his aunt was visiting them. Tragically, the fate willed otherwise.

Aman’s father Suresh works as a Group-D employee on contractual basis in Delhi, while his mother is a teacher at a private school. Friends, relatives and community members have been visiting the family at their residence in Vatsa Colony to offer condolences.

“Aman had demanded clothes and shoes for a wedding in the family. As it would cost Rs 4,000, I had started a Rapido ride service alongside my job to earn extra money,” said an inconsolable Suresh, recalling his last words in the hospital: “Papa, please give me some water.”

The family members said this was the second incident of a basketball pole collapsing in Bahadurgarh.

Similar accident in 2022 had left a child seriously injured. They demanded a strict action against those responsible for the tragedy to ensure that such incidents do not recur.

The family has also accused doctors at the PGIMS of negligence, claiming that timely and proper treatment could have saved him. Meanwhile, Satyendra, District Sports Officer (DSO) in Jhajjar, claimed that the ground where the basketball court has been set up belongs to a government school situated nearby. “We only operate a wrestling nursery there. So we have no concern with the basketball court. Youngsters also use the stadium to play cricket and other games,” he added.
