The Jan Sangathan and Progressive Citizens’ Forum took up civic issues of the town, including leakage of the sewerage line, with the Deputy Commissioner at the Samadhan Shivir in Bhiwani on Thursday.

The forum representatives led by Om Prakash highlighted the persistent sewer leakage near Chaudhary Bansi Lal Civil Hospital, adjacent to Circular Road in the town. The sewage water accumulated in an open space due to the leakage has severely damaged the hospital’s boundary wall, posing a safety threat.

Om Prakash said they met Deputy Commissioner Mahavir Kaushik and brought the matter to the notice of the district administration. “The hospital wall is completely waterlogged. It has got structurally weak due to seepage of water for a long time and it can collapse anytime,” he said. Moreover, stagnant sewage water along the road emits foul smell which is also a major inconvenience to commuters and visitors to the hospital besides a blot on the cleanliness drive by the administration in the town.

Sher Singh, another resident, said it was surprising that the government departments did now know about which of the departments needed to fix the problem. He said the Deputy Commissioner had directed the officials to immediately start work to repair the damaged line. He said they would meet the DC again after four days if the authorities concerned failed to take cognisance of the directions of the DC.

The Forum members also expressed concern over the malfunctioned streetlights across several streets and roads in Bhiwani town. “Many lights remain non-functional, while others stay lit during the day due to faulty switching systems,” Om Prakash said, adding that it was apparently the negligence of the department concerned. “This waste of energy results in financial losses to the department, which ultimately burden electricity consumers through increased tariffs,” he said.

The forum representatives said the Deputy Commissioner gave a patient hearing and immediately directed the officials concerned who were present in the shivir to take note of the problems promptly. The forum warned that if these problems remained unresolved, they would again take up the matter and would file formal complaints against the authorities responsible for it.
