Bhukkal seeks capital punishment for accused

Former Education Minister and local Congress MLA Geeta Bhukkal has demanded capital punishment for the accused in the rape and murder case of a postgraduate trainee doctor of Kolkata. She also demanded security for doctors across the nation.
Bhukkal was interacting with the media while participating in the candle march taken out by doctors of private hospitals under the aegis of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) to register their protest against the crime.
“Ensuring the safety of not only the doctors but every citizen of the country is the responsibility of the government, but it is unfortunate that cases of crime against women have been persistently rising while the governments are failing to curb these. A fast-track court should be established for the Kolkata case,” said the MLA.
She said it was a major cause for concern that women were unsafe even at their workplace. The government should execute the Central Protection Act for Doctors in an effective manner. Bhukkal also said the Congress would ensure safety of the doctors in the state as it is going to form the government on October 4.
Earlier, doctors associated with the IMA went on strike demanding swift justice for the deceased doctor.
OPD at private hospitals and clinics remained shut leading to inconvenience to the patients. Later, they took out a candle march from Chhikara Chowk to Ambedkar Chowk seeking security for health professionals.
