Two big pits have appeared on the middle of Rania Road in Sirsa, causing major traffic problem and posing risk to commuters. Due to these pits, the road has been closed for vehicles and residents are inconvenienced.

According to reports, an old sewerage line runs beneath the Rania-Polytechnic Road. The line is damaged and leaking, which has caused the road to sink at several places over the past few days. On Saturday, the road caved in even more and now the pits are about 20-30 ft wide and quite deep. Madan Chabra, a resident, said the condition of the road had been poor for many days, but no action was taken by the authorities. Heavy vehicles and daily traffic used the road, but now it’s become too dangerous to cross it. The locals feared that if the road sank further, a major accident could occur.

Surprisingly, even after several days, no help has come from the local administration, the municipal council or the Health Department. The residents said the road was incomplete for over one and a half years and the area had been ignored by the authorities.

People demanded that the old sewerage line be repaired immediately and the road be properly fixed. The locals also expressed frustration, saying that the leaders made promises of development only during elections but forgot soon after.

A Public Health Department official said the road might have sunk because the water supply was blocked and the sewer line damaged. He said the exact reason would be known after digging and inspection. He also said repair work would begin soon. Barricades had been installed around the pit for safety, he said.
