The protesting residents were led by BJP’s sitting Municipal Councillor Kapil Nagpal, who also sat on the dharna along with them at a local office of the Department of Public Health and Engineering.

When asked why he had to resort to a dharna despite being a leader of the ruling party, Nagpal stated that he had been getting numerous complaints from the residents of several colonies in his ward regarding shortage of water and supply of contaminated water.

“Black water contaminated with sewage water and cattle-dung is being supplied for drinking in Quilla Mohalla, Saidass Colony, Mahavir Colony, Krishna Colony and Pada Mohalla localities under Ward No.7 which I represent. I have apprised all officers of the department and district of the matter, but to no avail. Hence, I had no option but to stage a dharna with the affected residents,” he said.

The councillor lamented that the water being supplied for drinking was contaminated and gave out a foul smell. It could not be used for washing or cleaning, let alone bathing or drinking. The locals accompanying the councillor also lamented that they had been facing an acute shortage of water and even the water being supplied could not be used for any purpose.

The officers concerned assured the protesting residents that the problem of contaminated water would be resolved within a week and a permanent solution would be provided with the changing of faulty pipes etc in about two months after floating tenders.
