The mayoral election in Hisar has entered an interesting phase, with the internal tussle in the BJP coming to the fore over the joining of rebel BJP leaders who had contested the Assembly poll against the party.

While some party leaders are opposing their re-entry, others are keen to have them back in view of the elections.

While former minister Kamal Gupta opposed their re-entry, some leaders are eager to take them back in view of the urban local bodies (ULB) poll.

Party sources said Gupta, who had lost the Assembly elections on the BJP ticket to Independent candidate Savitri Jindal, had been opposing their return, taking a plea that they had contested against the BJP. However, some leaders were keen to welcome them back, considering the importance of securing votes in the upcoming elections.

A high-voltage political drama has unfolded as the Chief Minister’s scheduled visit to Hisar yesterday was postponed, reportedly due to this issue. Gupta has reportedly blocked the rejoining of rebel leader Tarun Jain and former mayor Gautam Sardana. Both had contested against the BJP.

However, Cabinet minister and MLA from Barwala Assembly segment, Ranbir Gangwa, visited Jain’s residence to seek his support. In the presence of Gangwa, Jain announced his support for the BJP, along with his supporters. The sources said Sardana was also keen to back the BJP in the poll.

The party leadership has directed both leaders to reconcile with Gupta before making a final decision. Gangwa had recommended Jain’s return, citing his ability to secure 1,000 votes in the Assembly elections. However, with Gupta standing firm, the party leadership now faces a dilemma and is weighing the political risks of their rejoining.

Interestingly, despite extending his support, Jain remains uncertain about his official return to the BJP. In a statement to the media, he said he considered himself a part of the BJP, but was unsure when he would join the party.
