While the BJP is yet to officially announce its list of candidates for the Assembly elections, former minister and party leader Rao Narbir Singh today announced that he got the ticket from Badshahpur. Narbir, while talking to The Tribune said that he was given the ticket after he met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Had threatened to switch to Congress

  • Rao Narbir Singh had on September 1 threatened that he would switch over to the Congress if he was denied the BJP ticket from the Badshahpur seat
  • Rao Narbir’s claim to the seat was challenged when former MP Sudha Yadav with the support of Gurugram MP Rao Inderjit Singh sought the ticket from Badshahpur

“While many leaders were internally trying to scuttle my ticket by not caring about the party’s future, Home Minister Amit Shah met me. We had a productive discussion over the party’s third term in Haryana. I am fighting the election from Badshahpur,” he said. The moment this news spread, his supporters started celebrations by bursting fire crackers in front of his Gurugram home. The party has, however, till the filing of this report, not confirmed his candidature. The pictures of celebrations, which went viral, did hurt the spirits of other leaders.

“If he is getting the ticket, then it’s clear that only arm-twisting and pressure politics work in the party and there is no room for dedication or hard work. Many of us will have to rethink our association with the party,” said one of the ticket probables from Badshahpur.

There were reports of Rao Narbir also having met Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda but he did not confirm the same.

Narbir has for months been vocal about how the party’s internal politics led to the denial of ticket to him in 2019. He had announced his assured candidature even before the elections were declared. He came across as the most confident candidate who warned that if the BJP didn’t field him, the party will lose Haryana’s biggest Assembly segment.

Rao Narbir’s claim to the seat was challenged when former MP Sudha Yadav entered the scene, seeking the ticket from Badshahpur. She reportedly had the support of Gurugram MP and Ahir leader Rao Inderjit Singh. Rattled Narbir had announced that if the BJP denied him ticket, he will join the Congress.
