Khan is the younger brother of Congress leader Akram Khan, a former minister and Deputy Speaker of Haryana Assembly.

The post of chairman of Zila Parishad had been lying vacant for a few months after Renu Bala resigned from this post on being elected MLA from Sadhaura Assembly segment of Yamunanagar district.

As a BJP candidate, Renu Bala (now Congress MLA) had been elected as chairperson on May 4, 2016 in a draw after the BJP and BSP candidates secured nine votes each.

Under tight security, the election was held on Tuesday at Yamunanagar’s mini secretariat in the supervision of KK Bhadoo, Additional Deputy Commissioner.

According to information, there are 18 wards of the Zila Parishad in Yamunanagar district. After becoming MLA, Renu Bala is now not a member of the Zila Parishad. Therefore, 17 members participated in Tuesday’s election.

“The BJP has given me a chance to serve the people of my district. My priority will be to undertake development works in the district,” said Sohan Lal, newly elected chairman.
