Jindal group chairperson Savitri Jindal, India's top businesswoman-cum-politician and mother of BJP MP from Kurukshetra Naveen Jindal, has announced that she will contest from the Hisar Assembly constituency as an Independent candidate. Savitri was an aspirant for the BJP ticket. But the party has retained two-time MLA and Health Minister Kamal Gupta as its candidate.

She announced on social media that she would file nomination papers as an Independent. A large number of her supporters gathered at her House and she would proceed to the Mini Secretariat to file the papers.

“Though I have campaigned for my son, who contested on the BJP ticket from the Kurukshetra Lok Sabha constituency recently, I have not joined the party formally,” she stated.

Sources indicated that she was also in contact with the Congress in the hope of a ticket, but the party on Wednesday night announced that it would field Ram Niwas Rara. Savitri had been two-time Congress MLA from Hisar and also served as a Cabinet minister in the Bhupinder Hooda government.

She joined politics following the death of her husband in a chopper crash in 2005. She was defeated by BJP’s Kamal Gupta in the 2014 Assembly poll and opted out of electoral politics in 2019.
