Blame game on: AAP leaders inspect Yamuna contamination
The ongoing battle between AAP and BJP over Yamuna River pollution continues to escalate. On Friday, AAP leaders, accompanied by media, visited Khojkipur village, where Drain Number 2 merges with the Yamuna and highlighted severe water contamination.
AAP leaders alleged that untreated chemical effluents were being discharged into Drain Number 2, making it difficult to even stand near the area due to the foul smell. The water flowing through the drain was visibly different in colour compared to the natural flow of the Yamuna, they claimed.
AAP leader Surender Ahlawat criticised the Haryana Government, stating that instead of focusing on the Delhi elections, the state administration should be concerned about Haryana’s residents, many of whom live along the Yamuna and suffer from its worsening pollution. He urged Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to visit Khojkipur village in the Samalkha constituency and witness firsthand the pollution caused by Drain Number 2, which has been contaminating the Yamuna for years.
Ahlawat further alleged that residents living near the drain were suffering from skin diseases and other health issues due to exposure to chemical-laden water. He accused textile dyeing units of releasing millions of litres of untreated effluents into Drain Number 2 each evening through tankers, yet no action had been taken by the government.
He also claimed that sewage treatment plants (STPs) and Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) were not functioning properly, leading to the direct flow of untreated sewage into Drains 1 and 2, which ultimately reach the Yamuna. This contamination, he said, had also affected groundwater in several villages.
The AAP delegation collected water samples from the site and announced plans to send them for chemical analysis. The test results would be made public, Ahlawat added.
