Body of Hisar youth killed in Russia-Ukraine war to arrive home today
28-year-old Sonu was lured to Russia on promise of language course, forced into army
The foreign dream of another Haryana youth has ended in tragedy, as the body of Sonu (28), a resident of Madanheri village in Hisar district, is expected to arrive in India from Russia tomorrow — nearly two months after his death in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
According to family members, Sonu’s body will reach Delhi tomorrow morning before being taken to his native village for the cremation in the afternoon.
“We have been in suspense for almost two months as there was no clarity about Sonu’s fate,” said Anil Kumar, a family member.
Anil said the family was recently contacted by a Russian commander identifying himself as Lieutenant Petrovich, who informed them about Sonu’s death and confirmed that the body was being flown to Delhi.
The news has left the family and villagers in deep shock. Sonu had gone to Russia in search of better prospects, but ended up losing his life in the war.
Trapped in the conflict
Another youth from the same village, Aman (24), who had also gone to Russia, is reported to be alive but trapped in the war zone, allegedly serving with the Russian army.
Sonu’s elder brother Vikas said both were sent to Russia by an agent, who promised to enroll them in a foreign language course.
“Sonu left for Russia on May 8, 2024. After some days, we came to know that he had been lured to join the Russian army and sent to the Ukrainian front,” Vikas said.
He added that Sonu last spoke to his family on September 3, telling them he was being forced into the army and pleading for help. Soon after, contact was lost.
On September 19, Vikas received a Telegram message in Russian that hinted at Sonu’s death in combat. For several weeks, the family reached out to the Indian embassy in Delhi seeking confirmation, but received no official word.
Finally, on October 26, the family received an email from the embassy confirming Sonu’s death and informing them that his body was being repatriated.
Another youth trapped
The family said Aman, who left for Russia on June 18, 2024, after being promised a security job, met a similar fate.
“The agents made him sign several documents, and later he was also forced into the army,” Vikas said.
Both families have made repeated appeals to the Indian government to intervene and ensure the safe return of other Indians trapped in the conflict.
