State DGP Manoj Yadava today visited a hospital here to enquire about the condition of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Jitender Kumar, who was injured during firing by gangsters in an attempt to free two undertrials from a prison van here on Saturday.
The DGP announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh for the police team which thwarted the escape plan. A police spokesperson said the DGP met the injured ASI in hospital. He said the DGP lauded the bravery of the police personnel who foiled the attempt to free undertrials and nabbed three of them after an encounter.
He said the department would bear all medical expenses of the injured ASI. “The police personnel will be given Rs 10 lakh as a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh has already been announced by the Faridabad Commissioner of Police,” said the spokesperson.
Giving details, he said one of the undertrials, identified as Sandeep alias Kala of Sonepat district, managed to flee during the encounter. He said Dhan Singh, the other undertrial, was nabbed along with two gangsters, identified as Naresh Sethi and Kapil Dagar.
According to the police, at least six gangsters who had come in three vehicles intercepted the police vehicle taking the undertrials from Faridabad to Gurugram around 3:20 pm on Saturday. The ASI was injured when the gangsters opened fire.
With police teams chasing the gangsters and putting up barricades, one of the vehicles with two gangsters and one undertrial got stuck. The accused tried to dodge the police team by leaving their vehicle and snatching an SUV near Pali village, but could not escape.
The owner of the SUV, identified as Ajit, got injured as the gangsters shot at him. A huge cache of weapons, including seven pistols, a gun and 236 live cartridges, were recovered from them.
