Taking note of encroachments on city roads by shopkeepers, the Sonepat police have booked five shopkeepers under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), for not removing their wares despite warning several times. They have been served notices by the Municipal Corporation.
Head Constable Satish Kumar, who was deployed as zonal officer in the south zone of the Gur Mandi area, in his complaint to the city police said that five shop owners —Rohilla Har Bhandar, Haryana Bartan Bhandar, Vaibhav Furniture House, Satynarayan Kiryana Store and Ashok Fruit shop near Mission Chowk — kept their good on the roads. However, the MC has served notices on them and even warned them several times to remove their goods, but they have paid no heed.
The complainant further said due to the encroachment, the commuters had to face a lot of problems and led to traffic jams. Following the complaint, the City police have registered a case against the five shopkeepers.
Meanwhile, the joint team of the traffic wing of the Sonepat police and the municipal corporation (MC) carried out a special anti-encroachment drive from bus stand to the Murthal Adda and removed rehris, the goods kept infront of the shops and illegally parked vehicles.
The stretch from the bus stand to Murthal Adda is considered extremely congested. Schoolchildren, people going to offices and the emergency service vehicles were facing a lot of problems due to the traffic jam here.
During the drive, it also came to the knowledge of the police that some shopkeepers were taking rent from the rehri owners and allowed them to stand on the road, in front of their shops, to sell their wares.
The Sonepat police and the Municipal Corporation (MC), Sonepat, had jointly launched a special anti-encroachment drive on the city roads last month.
During the month-long drive, the traffic police in the city launched awareness programmes and pacified the shopkeepers to keep their goods within the limits of their shops and not to encroach the roads by keeping their goods there.
Narender Kadyan, DCP Traffic, said the city roads were congested due to the encroachments by the shopkeepers and showroom owners and illegally parked vehicles, rehris and un-authorised temporary shops, which was the major reason for traffic jams.
The anti-encroachment drive would be continued and strict action initiated against the violators, he said.
Kadyan said five shopkeepers were booked for encroaching the roads by keeping their goods on it. He appealed to the shopkeepers, businessmen and common people not to encroach the roads and support in making Sonepat jam-free city.
