In a significant development for the region, construction of the long-awaited Budhwal sub-canal has finally begun, ending a delay of over three decades. The project is expected to benefit farmers in several villages across the district by providing much-needed water for agricultural use.

This milestone is attributed to the persistent efforts of Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who has been actively following up on the project to ensure its execution.

An official said the land for the Budhwal sub-canal was acquired in 1990 and the award was subsequently declared in May 1992. However, during that period, the villagers from Budhwal objected to construction within their village boundaries, causing the project to be halted in 1995. As a result, the remaining work has remained pending ever since. However, with the CM’s intervention, the Irrigation Department resumed efforts to overcome these challenges, he added.

“In May 2025, the Irrigation Department sought assistance from the district administration, leading to the appointment of a duty magistrate. On May 28, the government exercised its authority to take possession of the disputed land. Subsequently, land measurement was completed on June 5, and construction work began promptly,” said an official.

He said the canal’s completion was expected to provide irrigation to hundreds of acres in the region, offering a significant boost to local agriculture. Additionally, it is anticipated to improve the groundwater table, which has been depleting due to low rainfall.

Rajesh Khatri, Superintending Engineer of the Irrigation Department, emphasised that the project would be a boon for the farmers and contribute to the region’s agricultural prosperity.

Sub-Divisional Officer Rajesh Kumar Verma noted that despite previous delays, the contractor had been directed to complete the remaining work within the next six months.
