Campus notes: Workshop on transgender rights
The Department of Psychology and Department of Sociology at Central University of Haryana (CUH) here organised a sensitisation workshop on transgender rights, sponsored by the National Institute of Social Defence, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. The workshop aimed to raise awareness about legal rights, social challenges and healthcare needs of transgender persons. Prof Tankeshwar Kumar, Vice Chancellor, emphasised on the importance of addressing such a crucial, often overlooked topic, and reassured participants of the university's commitment to fostering an inclusive environment for all genders. The programme commenced with a welcome address by Prof Payal Kanwar Chandel, Dean, Humanities and Social Sciences, who introduced the audience to the workshop's objectives and purpose. Dr Jaswant Kumar, Transgender Complaint Officer, CUH, emphasised on the importance of inclusivity in educational spaces. The technical sessions covered critical aspects of transgender issues. Yashwinder Singh, Transgender Welfare Board, Chandigarh, delivered a session on "Transgender rights: A socio-legal perspective" highlighting the evolution of transgender laws in India and their role in promoting social justice. Manpreet, Program Officer, Pahal Foundation, spoke on "Stigma and transgender: An overview of social issues, addressing the discrimination and exclusion faced by transgender individuals". Dr Manish Bamrotiya, Deputy Chief of Party and Technical Director, Accelerate, Johns Hopkins University, discussed "Transgender persons and HIV: Addressing health inequities through rights-based approaches", emphasising on the need for equitable healthcare and HIV prevention strategies. A personal experience session by Nargis, an ex-student of the CUH, who transformed her gender identity, offered an inspiring story of resilience. Dr Renu Yadav, MBBS, MD Gynaecologist, and IMA member, concluded discussions with "Gender development and reproductive health of gender diverse individuals" focusing on medical and psychological aspects of gender transition. The workshop concluded with a valedictory session led by Prof Payal K Chandel, who distributed certificates among participants and volunteers.
Indira Gandhi University celebrates World Sparrow Day
Rewari: Indira Gandhi University (IGU) here organised various activities to mark the World Sparrow Day with an aim to raise awareness about sparrow conservation and encourage students to actively participate in environmental protection. On the occasion, an expert guest, Dr Asha Poonia, Assistant Professor, Chaudhary Bansi Lal University, Bhiwani, delivered an in-depth lecture in which she discussed in detail the declining number of sparrows, the need for their conservation, various threats they face and suggested measures for their protection. During the programme, nest-making, water container competition, slogan competition, photography competition, and documentary competition were organised. More than 100 students participated enthusiastically in these competitions. Dr Pankaj Tyagi, Head, Department of Zoology, made students aware of bird conservation and also conveyed the message of safeguarding the environment by planting trees and plants. Dr Mukesh Kumar, Head, Department of Political Science, urged all students to engage in activities that help purify the environment alongside their education. At the end of the programme, winners of the competitions were awarded certificates.
World Oral Health Day celebrated
Rohtak: During celebrations of the World Oral Health Day, the Department of Public Health Dentistry, Post Graduate Institute of Dental Sciences (PGIDS), Rohtak, jointly led by Dr Manjunath BC, Senior Professor and Head, Dr Adarsh Kumar, Dr Vipul Yadav, and Dr Bhavna organised a pledge activity for dental students and doctors. A compelling nukkad natak (street play) was presented to raise awareness about the importance of oral hygiene and healthy dental practices among patients visiting the Dental Hospital. Dr Sanjay Tewari, Principal, emphasised on the importance of adopting daily oral care routines and encouraged students and staff to make sure to brush twice a day, floss regularly, avoid excessive sugar intake and schedule regular dental check-ups. The pledge underscored the importance of maintaining oral health to prevent common issues like cavities, gum disease and bad breath. TNS creative expression in shaping a progressive society. Alumni meet at central University
Mahendragarh: An alumni meet will be organised at Central University of Haryana (CUH), here on March 22. Former students, who studied at the CUH, will participate in the meet. Prof Tankeswar Kumar, Vice Chancellor, would be the chief guest on the occasion. Prof Harish Kumar, Dean (Alumni), said former students and scholars, who studied at the CUH, would participate in the meet. On the occasion, alumni would have the opportunity to interact with university's Vice Chancellor and faculty members, share their experiences and also visit various departments of the university.
