Campus notes: NGO tour for college students
The social work department of Guru Nanak Khalsa College recently organised an NGO tour for students of the college’s BA (social work) course. Under the initiative, students visited Nehru Yuva Kendra and the Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre, HIV Department, Mukand Lal Civil Hospital. The primary objective of the tour was to enhance awareness about the functioning of various organisations and emphasise the importance of practical education in the field of social work. Officiating Principal Pratima Sharma appreciated the initiative, and said field visits like these bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-life challenges. Department Head Dr Sahib Singh and Associate Professor Dr Hemant Mishra said the underlying idea was to make students understand grassroots-level realities. Such tours helped them comprehend the structure and functioning of welfare organisations and the impact of their work, they added. The tour commenced with a visit to Nehru Yuva Kendra, where District Youth Officer Omkar Swami briefed the students about the various programmes and initiatives undertaken by them. Following this, the students visited the testing centre at the Civil Hospital, which provides services related to HIV/AIDS awareness, testing and counseling. Head Counselor Sonali Sharma educated the students on HIV, methods of prevention and the treatment available for infected individuals. She also highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and social support for affected individuals.

Short films bring laurels
Rohtak: Two short films of the faculty of film and television, Dada Lakhmi Chand State University of Performing and Visual Arts, screened at the Haryana Film Festival held at Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, recently. “Nachar” bagged the Best Film and Best Actor awards. Directed by two students of the acting course, Naina and Chetan Sharma, the film captures the struggles and emotional turmoil of a male artiste who plays female roles. “Bantu Ki Toli,” a 24-minute short film written and directed by Ashish Nehra, Assistant Professor (Acting), received a Token of Appreciation at the festival in the professional category. Set in the rural landscape of Bamla village, the film weaves the message of the Swachh Bharat Mission into a humorous and engaging narrative. It tells the story of a village battling with garbage management issues, where a social worker attempts to raise awareness among villagers, only to be met with resistance. The turning point comes when a group of mischievous children, led by Bantu, scare villagers by spreading a rumour that a ghost appears when garbage is thrown around. What follows is a dramatic exploration of change and responsibility. The film has already made its mark at various platforms such as the Jaipur and Raipur film festivals. The makers of the films were felicitated by Vice-Chancellor Shree Prakash Singh in the presence of Registrar Dr Gunjan Malik and Head, faculty of film and television, Dr Mahesh.
