A minor canal between Kumharia and Kheri villages in the Nathusari Chopta area suddenly breached on Friday morning, flooding nearly 10 acres of standing wheat and mustard crops. The crack appeared near the fields of farmers Raj Kumar and Net Ram, allowing canal water to rush into the surrounding farmland.

Farmers said their freshly sown crops were submerged within minutes, causing significant financial loss. Net Ram’s tubewell was also damaged after water entered the area. They added that they will now have to re-sow their fields, which will double their expenses.

Villagers Bilu Beniwal, Sunil Kumar and Raj Kumar said the breach flooded 4 acres of Raj Kumar’s wheat crop and 3 acres each of mustard belonging to Sunil Kumar and Prithvi Singh.

As soon as the water entered the fields, villagers informed the Irrigation Department. Officials reached the site, assessed the damage and began repair work. Using a JCB machine, workers filled the crack and restored the embankment. After nearly four hours of continuous work, the leakage was brought under control.

Farmers noted that this section lies at the tail end of the canal, where both the width and water pressure are low. Because of this, the breach was contained in time and the situation did not escalate further.
