According to the latest livestock census data, the most significant increase has been observed in the cattle population, including cows, which has risen by nearly 22 per cent, whereas the buffalo population has increased by 9 per cent. The census was conducted across 408 wards in Hisar, with teams from the Animal Husbandry Department surveying 4,19,678 buildings, including houses, shops, hospitals, factories, schools and temples. The survey, which began in October 2024, was conducted digitally using tablets and completed ahead of schedule.

Apart from cows and buffaloes, the census recorded other livestock, including camels, horses, donkeys, mules, pigs, sheep, goats, rabbits, dogs, and poultry. The department also collected data on livestock diseases and detailed information about the animal owners.

The Haryana Government has implemented several schemes for cow protection, including subsidies for purchasing cows, with financial assistance ranging from Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000. The growing population of stray cows on the streets is also a factor in the increase of cow population.

Dr Subhash Chander Jangra, Deputy Director of the Animal Husbandry Department, said the livestock census was conducted digitally using an app to maintain accurate records of every animal. The survey was completed within five months, and a detailed report will be released soon. He noted that apart from cows and buffaloes, there is also a growing interest among farmers in poultry farming, pig farming, and sheep and goat rearing.
