CCTV cameras to be installed at over 650 ration depots in Karnal

The Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department is going to install CCTV cameras at all ration depots across the state with an aim to ensure transparency in the operations.

As per officials, a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) regarding the installation of CCTV cameras is being prepared at the state headquarters level. “On the directions of the Minister of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Rajesh Nagar, the cameras will be installed at ration depots across the state. In Karnal district alone, we will install cameras at over 650 depots,” said Anil Kumar, DFSC.

The purpose is to check any irregularities in the distribution of ration to underprivileged persons. “This step will not only ensure transparency but also accountability in the public distribution system. Complete transparency will be maintained in stock receiving, sales, and overall depot operations. Beneficiaries will now have full confidence that their entitlements are being managed fairly,” he added.

“The process of planning has already begun, and we are working on implementing it at the earliest. Cameras will cover the opening and closing of depots, stock movement, and transactions with beneficiaries,” he said.

He further said every depot would have to follow proper guidelines. The data from the cameras would not only be stored locally but also have a backup on a central server. This would ensure that records remained safe and tamper-proof.

Highlighting the importance of technology in the distribution system, he said, “Technology is a strong tool against malpractice. With real-time monitoring and hard backup systems, the government can ensure that the supply chain remains fair and transparent. This is in the best interest of both the system and the beneficiaries.”

He said the step would strengthen trust, improve efficiency, and make depot functioning more accountable.
