Chaos erupted at Rohtak railway station on Monday evening as pilgrims headed for the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj were unable to board the overcrowded Tripura-Sundari Express. Rohit, along with 11 others from Baland village, was forced to abandon the journey after repeated attempts to secure a berth failed.
“We purchased tickets for the journey, but the train was so overcrowded that passengers inside refused to open the doors when it halted at the station,” said Rohit. “The train only stopped for a couple of minutes before departing, leaving us with no option but to return home.”
The situation was no different for many other pilgrims who hoped to take a holy dip at the Maha Kumbh but were left stranded. A large crowd surged onto the platform, creating chaos and minor injuries as passengers jostled to board.
"A chaotic scene unfolded when the train arrived," recalled Ram Kumar, an elderly passenger. "Even those with reserved berths couldn’t board because of the overcrowding. Many were left frustrated and the police had a tough time controlling the situation." He also demanded that railway authorities issue refunds for tickets in such circumstances, arguing, “If they cannot ensure a seat, they should at least compensate us for the inconvenience.”
Sub-Inspector Baljeet Singh of the Government Railway Police confirmed the chaotic situation, explaining that the surge in passengers heading to Prayagraj was the main cause. “Despite the overcrowding, the police managed to control the crowd,” he said.
Somvir, another passenger from Hisar, said he and six others from his group had no choice but to either return home or look for alternative transport. “We couldn’t board the train despite multiple attempts. Now, we’ll consider travelling by bus or personal vehicle,” he said.
Manish, another stranded pilgrim, echoed similar concerns. “It’s not feasible to travel under such conditions. The Railways should have anticipated the demand and arranged for additional trains,” he said.
Attempts to reach Station Master Balram Meena for comment were unsuccessful. The situation has left many pilgrims frustrated, urging authorities to take immediate steps to manage the rush during peak religious events.
