Jind, December 25
The District administration prevented a child marriage in Mandi Kalan village on Wednesday, which is the third such intervention this month. Acting on a tip-off, District Child Marriage Prohibition Officer Sunita dispatched her team, accompanied by the police and representatives from the NGO MDD of India, to the spot to take further action.
The marriage involved a 16-year-old girl from Mandi Kalan village and a 28-year-old youth from Sunderpura village of the same district. On arrival, officials informed both families about the provisions of the Child Marriage Prohibition Act, 2006, and warned them of strict legal consequences if the marriage was solemnised. Following the intervention, the wedding ceremony was halted, and the groom’s procession returned without proceeding further.
The girl’s parents, when questioned, stated that they were uneducated and unaware of the legal implications of child marriage.
Earlier this month, the district administration successfully stopped two child marriages—one on December 1 at Barah Khurd village and another on December 7 at Didwara village.
