- The repair and rehabilitation of Tower J is also not feasible due to the high chloride content in the concrete throughout the structure, which has already acted detrimentally
- Therefore, the committee is of the view that tower be permanently closed and the residents who are still living in it be asked to vacate immediately
The report by a panel from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, as regards Tower J was submitted to the administration today. With this, all towers of the society have been audited and this is the sixth tower to be declared “unsafe to live”.
Before this, the D, E, F, G and H towers were declared “unsafe to live”. Tower D partially collapsed in February 2022, claiming two lives and a structural audit of all towers in the society was ordered. There are nine towers in the housing society.
According to the report submitted by IIT-Delhi, the structure of Tower J is “not safe for habitation” and must be evacuated immediately.
“The repair and rehabilitation of Tower J is also not feasible due to the high chloride content in the concrete throughout the structure, which has already acted detrimentally. Therefore, the committee is of the view that Tower J be permanently closed. The residents who are still living in the tower should be asked to vacate it immediately,” read the report. Tower J has 52 flats and around 48 families are living in it.
“The committee thinks that the construction and quality monitoring by the developer were not as per prescribed parameters. This has been pointed out in the report as well where it has been mentioned that due to the widespread presence of chlorides in the structure and lack of chlorides in the air to which the buildings are exposed, it can be deduced that the chlorides were present in the concrete at the time of its production,” the structural safety audit report said.
