Chief Minister (CM) Nayab Singh Saini has said the state government is committed to bringing prisoners back into the mainstream by offering opportunities for rehabilitation while in custody. To this end, jails are being equipped with skill development, education and psychological support facilities to help inmates reintegrate and lead dignified lives post-release.
The CM made these remarks after inaugurating the ultra-modern district jail complex at Fideri village on Sunday. Constructed at a cost of Rs 95 crore over 50 acres, the facility was formally opened in the presence of Jail and Tourism Minister Dr Arvind Sharma, BJP MLAs Laxman Singh Yadav, Anil Yadav, Dr Krishan Kumar and former minister Dr Banwari Lal.
Following the inauguration, the CM visited the administrative offices and toured the jail complex. As part of the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, he also planted saplings within the complex to promote environmental protection. He later interacted cordially with all attendees at the event.
“This new district jail, equipped with modern amenities, has the capacity to house 1,000 prisoners. State-of-the-art techniques have been adopted to ensure effective reform and rehabilitation programmes. The complex comprises an administrative building, 11 barracks, two security wards, an industrial space, a 30-bed hospital, control room, canteen and warehouse,” said the CM.
Saini further stated that 74 staff quarters, a warder hostel, a shopping complex, park and a community centre had been constructed as part of the residential section of the project. He emphasised that trained staff had been appointed for the smooth functioning of the facility, with special attention given to the deployment of women personnel to ensure appropriate care for female inmates.
Speaking on prison infrastructure across the state, the CM said, “A total of 335 video conferencing systems have been installed in jails across Haryana to facilitate virtual court appearances. Every aspect of prison life—from entry and release, to food, medical care, court hearings and the canteen system—has been fully digitised.”
Saini added that the state has three central jails and 17 district jails with a collective capacity of 22,647 prisoners. “Jail radio stations are currently operational in Central Jails Ambala and Hisar, as well as in the District Jails of Faridabad, Panipat, Gurugram, Karnal, Jhajjar, Rohtak, Yamunanagar and Kurukshetra. Construction of a high-security prison with ultra-modern safety infrastructure is nearing completion in Rohtak,” he said.
