The construction of the commercial space project at the site of the old grain market in the city picked up pace and is expected to be completed by October 2025. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 27.95 crore. Once completed, it will provide facilities such as parking, restaurants, food court and a gaming zone enhancing the city’s aesthetics while offering direct benefits to residents.

As per the authorities, the construction agency would also manage operations and maintenance for five years, said Dr Vaishali Sharma, Commissioner, Karnal Municipal Corporation (KMC).

She said the project began with extensive site excavation for a double-basement structure, followed by the laying of plain cement concrete (PCC) and basement rafting. The foundation, columns and slabs have been constructed, forming a double basement. Currently, slab casting for the ground floor is under way on one side, while the column work for the second floor is progressing on the other.

Sharma highlighted that the project would not only beautify the old grain market site but also ease traffic congestion in the city and the Novelty Road area by providing a designated parking space. The shopkeepers will have a safe and convenient place to park their vehicles. The restaurants and food court will offer quality dining options, while the gaming zone will provide entertainment for people of all age groups.

The Commissioner said the construction agency had been instructed to work at full capacity to ensure uninterrupted progress. She directed that quality standards should not be compromised at any stage. The KMC engineers have been directed to conduct regular site inspections, collect construction material samples for testing and ensure third-party inspections for transparency and quality assurance.
