Conch-blowing, Vedic mantras to connect students with tradition at Rohtak university

Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) is set to host a three-day “Deeksharambh Utsav” from July 28 to 30 at Tagore Auditorium to welcome newly admitted undergraduate students. For the first time, the event will begin with the blowing of the conch and chanting of Vedic mantras, connecting students with India’s ancient educational and cultural heritage.

The festival will symbolise the formal beginning of students’ academic and cultural journey at the university. Vice-Chancellor Prof Rajbir Singh will inaugurate the event. At a preparatory meeting held here on Sunday, he reviewed the arrangements with university officials and the organising committee, directing them to ensure a dignified and inspiring celebration.

Prof Harish Kumar, Dean, Academic Affairs, said a special ‘guest student gallery’ would allow existing students to also attend and draw inspiration from the sessions. Welcome gates and selfie points will be installed to create a vibrant and memorable environment for the newcomers. The event reflects the MDU’s strong academic culture and student-first approach, he added.

“The Utsav will feature motivational speakers and life coaches, who will guide students on life skills, goal setting and personal growth. Various departments and faculties will introduce students to the university’s academic structure, resources, evaluation methods, research opportunities and career prospects,” said the VC.

Prof Rajbir Singh said the students would also be briefed on the university’s infrastructure, including the library, sports facilities, cultural platforms and co-curricular activities. Notably, the event will be managed by the MDU’s students, promoting leadership and organisational skills.“The Utsav will instil confidence, purpose and a sense of identity in the students, while also fostering pride and emotional connection with the university,” the VC added.

Dean Students’ Welfare Prof Sapna Garg outlined the programme and shared the university’s vision to make Deeksharambh Utsav an annual tradition.
