The state unit of the Congress wants to contest the civic body elections in Haryana with ballot paper instead of EVM for which a delegation of the party will meet the Haryana Election Commission on Monday to press the demand.

This was stated by Jitendra Baghel, co-incharge of the party, talking to the mediapersons here today. Highlighting that the party has formed a committee to prevent rigging in the poll, Baghel said irregularities had surfaced in the reservation of wards for OBC and SC candidates. He said a delegation led by the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee president Udaybhan would take up the demand for the civic elections through ballot paper with the Election Commission to ensure transparency.

Announcing that the selection of the candidates will be done on merit, he said a scrutiny committee had been formed for the purpose. He added that the party would contest only the municipal corporation elections on party symbol. "The applications from the aspirants of the municipal corporation elections can be submitted to the incharge of the district election committee till February 11. He said the aspirants for the municipal council or committee could also approach the Congress committee.

Congress district incharge Aftab Ahmed and civic election committee co-incharge Rohtas Bedi were among those present at the meeting where some of the candidates submitted their applications from various wards in the city. The party would soon announce the list of its candidates for the Municipal Corporation Faridabad, it is claimed.
